The Acer Swift SF314-57-58VL advertises mobility in everyday life and should be space-saving and flexible. The laptop is delivered with Windows 10 Home and can be used immediately after a short setup.

We have extensively tested the device in everyday life in order to form our own judgment and to be able to compare it to other models in the Swift 3 series.

Our test result for the Acer Swift SF314-57-58VL

Too slow for gaming, too fast for everyday use: This version of the Acer Swift 3 is a little too expensive (however, it depends on your needs).

At least for what the laptop offers. We particularly criticize the sparse equipment and the inadequate sound quality. The hardware would also have to be stronger to justify the price. We had hoped for more! Nevertheless, the device scores with its great picture quality, the pleasant typing feel of the keyboard, and the long battery life in normal operation.

Thanks to its compact shape and low weight, the Acer Swift 3 is ideal if you want to work on the go. Gamers, graphic designers, and professional cutters are unlikely to be happy with this model.

  • Particularly light and slim design
  • Extremely quiet even with demanding tasks
  • Pure picture quality and a pleasant screen size
  • Fast loading times thanks to the built-in SSD data storage
  • Keyboard is intuitive and easy to use
  • Thanks to its light weight and powerful battery, it is ideal for on the go

  • Poor sound quality
  • Sparse equipment (especially CPU and RAM)
  • Performance could be better at the price
  • Inaccurate touchpad
  • Fingerprint sensor often took several tries
The mousepad of the Acer Swift 3 is unfortunately a little inaccurate, but the keyboard is all the more pleasant to use.

  • Battery & everyday life: 100 percent

Overall rating: 77 percent

Workmanship, feel, and design

Our first impression of the Acer Swift 3 was not particularly positive. The material does not feel particularly high-quality , and the light weight does not contribute to a high-quality feeling either.

The weight is also not an advantage when opening: the Acer Swift 3 is so light that it cannot be opened with one hand. The notch that is intended for opening the laptop is also not sufficient. For anyone who likes to work away from home, the low weight is a big plus.

And when it is open, the laptop looks much more valuable. In addition to the pleasant color scheme, the keyboard also contributes to this. The feeling when typing is very pleasant added to the fact that the device seems intuitive to use right from the start.

The touchpad, on the other hand, is not as precise and occasionally jerks the mouse pointer across the screen when putting the finger on or off. We recommend you buy an external mouse.

The fingerprint sensor does not work reliably either and often requires several attempts to unlock the device. After all, the fingerprint sensor is well placed and does not interfere at all in everyday life.

Display: small but powerful

The display of the Acer Swift 3 is at 14 inches quite small and is therefore decisive for the compact size of the device. Although the display is only 14 inches, it contributes significantly to the high-quality appearance when opened. Even cinema fans will get their money’s worth with the 16:9 format.

The image quality of Acer Swift 3 collects decent plus points. In addition to the Full HD resolution, which ensures razor-sharp images, the display offers bright colors and plenty of brightness. With that the basic requirements for a great movie night are laid. If it weren’t for the sound thing …

Video and audio

Videos and films are fun with the Swift 3 until the first sound leaves the speakers. In a nostalgic way, you are transported back to childhood, when tin cans replaced the smartphone. Nowadays, even smartphones have better sound quality – luckily, a reasonable headset can help.

The video quality, on the other hand, speaks in favor of the Acer Swift 3. With a refresh rate of 60 Hz , videos run smoothly and, thanks to the intense colors, animated (children’s) films are particularly nice to watch.

The standard processor clock frequency is 1 GHz, but can be increased to 3.6 GHz if necessary. Thus, the built-in ensures Intel Core i5 sufficient performance to be able to cope with everyday tasks in the best possible way. The CPU temperature during working and surfing hits an average of 45 ° C. It is so cool that even the fan shows no signs of excessive effort and the device continuously works quietly.

Unfortunately, the Acer Swift 3 does not have a dedicated graphics card. This can also be clearly seen in 3DMark in the Time Spy test. While the Intel Core i5 still gets 2,645 points, the GPU only achieves 468. This is not noticeable in everyday use, but gamers won’t find it entertaining.

Also, rendering a three-minute full HD video with a few effects takes 15 minutes and is correspondingly fast. It is particularly positive that nothing can be heard from the fan during rendering. However, as soon as the first video effects and transitions are inserted, the video preview runs only smoothly with the lowest settings . The Acer Swift 3 is therefore not suitable for current games or complex image and video editing.

Connectivity and storage

In terms of equipment, the Acer Swift 3 benefits from its Bluetooth 5.0 interface, the range of which is four times greater than its predecessor, Bluetooth 4.2. The built-in Wi-Fi 6 is also state-of-the-art and enables particularly fast downloads . In addition to a USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 port , the laptop also has a USB-C port , which with Thunderbolt 3 ensures rapid data exchange.

acer swift 3 connectivity
The Acer Swift 3 has all common connections – even USB Type C can be connected without an adapter.

The 1 TB SSD hard drive lets the system boot up in a few seconds and executes installed programs in no time at all. Only the size of the built-in memory could be significantly more generous in this price category. With a laptop at it price range, we expect more than just a built-in, non-expandable RAM bar with 8 GB of working memory.

Battery and everyday life

With normal use of Firefox , Word and Google Drive, as well as occasionally playing short YouTube videos and downloading smaller files, the battery of the Acer Swift 3 lasts around 6 hours. That’s decent when you consider that many laptops in the same price range have a shorter battery life. This is definitely enough for commuters and people who like to work from a café.

The matte display speaks in favor of using the laptop outside of dark rooms. But it can also be used at night or in a darkened room thanks to the illuminated keyboard.

Acer Swift SF314-57-58VL: For whom it is suitable + alternatives

With its light weight, size and good battery life, the Acer Swift 3 that we tested is perfect for those who regularly work from the outside world. Also, authors and other professional groups who edit small amounts of pictures or cut short videos will also find the Acer Swift 3 suitable for their day to day activities. And users who are simply looking for a solid laptop for surfing, Skype and everyday life are welcome to use it.

Acer Swift 3

Our price-performance winner is still the related model Acer Swift 3 SF314-41G-R491. A graphics card is even installed here, the AMD Radeon 540X provides sufficient power to play games – of course, it is still not enough for AAA titles, but at least it is. The RAM bar cannot be exchanged, but a second one can be added and the working memory can be increased to a maximum of 12 GB.

Alternative with more performance

The Acer Swift 3 Review

Dell XPS 13 (9380)

If you have more demands on performance, you unfortunately have to dig a little deeper into your pocket: The Dell XPS 13 is considered one of the best powerful and at the same time thin laptops on the market. However, it is expensive – more than the reviewd Acer Swift 3. In return, you get a powerful Intel Core i7, 16 GB of RAM and a high-quality touchpad. What is sorely lacking is a USB-A port, but fortunately there are now adapters.

The battery holds out well, but it gives up after around three hours in high-performance applications such as older role-playing games. If you absolutely have to work on the go, you should at least have the charging cable in your hand luggage.
